With the start of the new year, the flu season has begun. This year, there is a new flu strain and has more severe symptoms such as body aches, high fever, cough, runny nose, and vomiting. The new variant of influenza A H3N2 has already caused multiple hospitalizations and is spreading nationwide. Here are some recommendations from our practice on how to best protect your kids and treat symptoms. We are here for you and hope everyone stays safe this flu season!
How parents can protect their kids
Get your child vaccinated if they haven’t already—it’s not too late.
Wash hands often with soap and water.
Teach kids to cover coughs and sneezes.
Keep sick children home from school to prevent spread especially if have fever
Watch for warning signs like trouble breathing, dehydration, or fever that won’t come down—these are reasons to call your pediatrician right away.
Common treatments
Nasal spray- spray 1 to 2 sprays in each nostril. Use bulb suction if baby is under 6 months of age
Humidifiers and vaporizers
Try honey for your child’s cough. Not for babies under 1 yr old.
Can do 1-2 teaspoons of honey
Can apply Vicks rub on neck area for children age 2 or older
Best medications for fever: Tylenol or Motrin, make sure correct dosage is given based on age and weight
Drink plenty of fluids
