Being a parent can be a challenging task that is always evolving as your child grows. Many parents feel that each time they have figured out the stage their child is in, things change and they have to learn how to respond to new situations in their child’s life. The local county services in your area may offer resources for parents with questions regarding topics such as discipline, setting rules, and building healthy relationships between parents and children.
The Fairfax County Department of Family Services offers parenting education courses, a phone support line for parents, parent community cafes, a series of 101 parenting videos, and parenting tips/resources. Parenting courses are available in person or virtual and can be in English or Spanish. The classes are provided based on age group and are free to Fairfax County residents. Childcare and an evening meal are provided at the in person classes by volunteers in the area. Written resources on the website can be translated into a variety of languages. The parent cafe groups provide a community to local parents to discuss parenting concerns, tips, or form bonds with others.
Prince William County also offers a variety of parenting courses in English and Spanish. Their Systematic Training for Effective Parenting (STEP) program provides age based parenting guidelines and recommendations. There is a registration fee of $40 and their classes are available virtually via Zoom.
Fairfax County Public Schools offers a co-parenting class to help guide parents of children going between two homes. This course is priced at $40 for an individual or $60 for a pair. This course is in person and is one 4-hour session. Fairfax County also has a coparenting class option that is available online. For this class, there is a $20 fee for a printed workbook resource.
